This ISWIM video lesson explains can adults learn to swim with a clear demonstration and practical coaching points. Use the video together with the notes below to understand the movement, recognise common mistakes and practise more purposefully.

Can adults learn to swim

Can you learn to swim as an adult, even if you're starting with zero swimming experience? In this real swimming lesson, I work with Taj during only his fifth lesson and show his progress step by step.

This is only Taj’s fifth swimming lesson. We work step by step on breathing, body position, kicking, floating, and one of the most important water-safety skills — calmly rolling from the front onto the back when you need to breathe, recover, or rest.

Just a few lessons ago, Taj panicked in the deep end and didn’t know what to do. In this lesson, you’ll see him return to the same area of the pool, control his breathing, roll onto his back, take a breath, and continue swimming.

Key Skills and Takeaways

  • Build breathing control before increasing distance

  • Improve body position without expecting a perfect float

  • Practise rolling from the front onto the back to rest

  • Use fins, noodles and aqua dumbbells as temporary learning tools

  • Approach deep water gradually and without pressure

How to Practise

Measure progress by control and confidence, not speed

Adapt technique to mobility, ankle flexibility and body composition

Return to familiar drills whenever tension increases

Safety First

Adult beginners should practise in a supervised pool with an instructor who can adapt each drill to their comfort, mobility and current swimming ability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this lesson suitable for beginners?

Yes. The video breaks the skill into manageable steps. Begin with the easiest supported version and progress only when you can stay relaxed and in control.

How often should I practise this skill?

Short, focused practice is usually more productive than repeating the skill until exhausted. Work on one or two details at a time and stop while you can still maintain calm breathing and good control.

Do I need a swimming instructor?

Video lessons can clarify technique and help you prepare, but an instructor can see your individual movement, correct unsafe habits and adapt the progression to your current ability.
