The Truth About Swim Schools in Vancouver: What Parents Need to Know

Why We Teach Differently at ISWIM — And Why It Matters More Than You Think
Today, I want to share something important — not just about swimming, but about how swimming should be taught, and why the ISWIM methodology stands out in a sea of conventional programs.
When I moved to Canada in 2016, I knew right away that I wanted to become a swim teacher, not just a coach. With a background in competitive swimming and elite water polo, I had already developed a deep understanding of biomechanics and what proper swim technique really looks like. That knowledge shaped everything I’ve built at ISWIM.
But what surprised me during my certification process in Canada was how many people came into swimming instructor courses with incorrect swimming technique — and even more concerning, how many went on to become swim teachers, passing that poor technique on to their students.
Why So Many Kids "Finish" Swim Lessons But Still Can’t Swim
This is why many parents feel confused and frustrated: their child has spent years in swim programs like Red Cross or Swim for Life, yet still cannot swim confidently — or worse, still feels unsafe in the water. These children struggle to join competitive swim clubs or water sports teams later on because they’ve never been taught proper technique.
The sad reality is this: just being able to stay afloat is not the same as knowing how to swim.
Imagine falling off a boat into open water with strong waves, and having to swim 1 or 2 kilometers to shore. Most students who have completed traditional swim programs in Canada would not be able to do this — not because they’re unfit, but because their technique is inefficient. Without proper form, even the strongest muscles will tire quickly.
In contrast, someone with strong technique glides through the water effortlessly. Every stroke moves them forward with minimal energy. This is what we teach at ISWIM — from the very first lesson.
The Problem With Most Swim Schools in Vancouver
Most local swim schools follow multi-level programs where students learn one or two small skills per level. These programs often stretch out progress, not to build competence — but to increase profits by keeping children in swim classes for years.
And it works — financially — because parents don’t realize that what their child is learning isn’t enough. Many swim schools market themselves as teaching “basic water safety,” but being able to float or dog paddle for a minute doesn’t mean you’re safe in deep or open water.
Let’s go back to that rough ocean scenario. Would you trust your child’s safety to a skill that barely covers survival in a calm pool?
What Makes ISWIM Different?
At ISWIM, we don’t waste time. Our unique curriculum is designed to teach correct technique from day one.
We offer just three core levels — Bronze, Silver, and Gold — and they’re all focused on real swimming ability. By the end of our Silver Level, most children can:
Swim long distances (up to 1000 meters in a typical class)
Dive safely and confidently in deep water
Use advanced techniques like butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and front crawl efficiently
Navigate water with stamina, confidence, and awareness
From the very first lesson, we focus on endurance, technique, and confidence — not just survival.
Our Gold Level: Training Future Champions
For students who want to push further, our Gold Level is a competitive preparation program for those aiming to join swim teams or water sports clubs. It’s where we polish every movement and introduce higher-intensity training — ideal for kids who dream of being faster, stronger, and more powerful in the water.
Why We’re Proud of Our Coaches and Students
Every ISWIM coach has a background in competitive swimming or international-level water polo, and all of them are fully trained in the ISWIM methodology. This means they bring not only experience, but also the teaching tools to transfer that knowledge effectively to students of all levels.
We are deeply proud of our students — not just because they swim better, but because they become confident, capable, and safe in any water environment. On average, students at ISWIM spend about one year in our program and leave as strong, independent swimmers.
Summer registration is now open at all our locations in Surrey, Burnaby, White Rock, and Abbotsford. If you're ready to see real progress — not just pass levels — this is the perfect time to get started.
